3rd XI match report by Sachin M

Ellerslie’s 3rd XI bowled out Chilwell’s 2nd XI to salvage a tie on Saturday.

Despite a precarious forecast, the toss went ahead on time and upon winning it Chilwell chose to field first. Tom Davey opened the batting for Ellerslie with Kartikey Parekh on a dry wicket under grey skies at East Leake. Neither batsman was lacking in caution as they calmly passed the first seven overs before Mohammad Rizwan bowled Parekh. Martin Foulds joined Davey with the scoreboard on 6 after 8 overs and the batsmen ran some brisk twos to make up for the slow start. But, the visitors inflicted another setback as Abdul Haseeb bowled Foulds for 6 leaving Ellerslie on 15/2 in the 13th over. Ryan Glossop was the next man in and he struck the first boundary of the innings before Rizwan bowled him.

In at number five, Mihir Patel alleviated the turbulence by combining sensible batting with superb running as he made all 24 of his runs between the wickets. Having steered Ellerslie to 63, Davey departed in the 27th over with 24 runs to his name. Aman Parekh was dismissed LBW soon after and the hosts slipped to 73/5. Captain Jack Webb pushed the scoreboard to 83 and fell to the sedate bowling of Peter Stewart in the 31st over. Then, Patel was given LBW shortly before Stewart dismissed Laura Wilson and left Ellerslie teetering on 94/8 with nine overs still left in the innings. However, Oliver Jenkinson batted brilliantly down the order scoring 25 runs in a most felicitous knock. Alongside Sachin Mathivanan, who scored 5 singles from 24 deliveries, Jenkinson built a pivotal partnership of 31 runs that would prove decisive. The pair batted on till the final ball of the innings and ensured that Ellerslie reached 125 without getting skittled.

Chilwell commenced the chase with a boundary in the first over of their innings, but Aman Parekh struck with the following delivery dismissing Ved Parkash. From the other end, Finlay Traynor forced the batsmen to play by attacking the stumps. After being despatched to the hedgerows twice, Traynor bowled Navood Zafar in his second over. Two balls later, Parekh dismissed Baswa Battula as the scoreboard read 16/3 at the end of the 5th over. Parekh struck twice more in his opening spell dismissing Narasimhulu Kummari and Shravan Madhumanchi for a run apiece as the visitors tripped to 38/5 after 13 overs. Ellerslie seemed primed to win comfortably as Chilwell required 95 runs with half their number back in the pavilion, but Abdul Haseeb recovered the chase in the following overs.

Mushtaq Hussain helped Haseeb stabilise the innings and they were both assisted by some poor catching. Wilson lured Haseeb into a reckless shot in her first over, but Mathivanan failed to hold on to the catch at mid-wicket and cost his team a thumping victory. Four more catches would be dropped in the coming overs as the batsmen put on 73 runs for the 6th wicket. Dropped first on 30 and twice more subsequently, Haseeb went on to score 61. Unsurprisingly, skipper Webb had some words to spare during the drinks break after which Wilson dismissed Haseeb thanks to an exemplary catch from Davey. Traynor dictated proceedings henceforth, dismissing the batsmen one by one without conceding a single run as Ellerslie looked a completely different side on the field. Acting tenaciously under pressure, Traynor bowled Naresh Vachala before Wilson ran out Trevor Peake and reduced Chilwell to 120/8. Though Hussain took the visitors to 125 at Parekh’s expense, Ellerslie refused to yield as Webb led by example bowling a crucial maiden over. In a climactic 34th over, Traynor bowled Rizwan for nought and gave Davey another excellent catch at point to conclude an intense contest with a fitting tie.

The 3rd XI can look forward to sunny weather when they host Ruddington next Saturday.
